"But we've branched out this year a lot during football, and the kids responded to what Chelle Jordan, our other cheerleading sponsor, and I come up with that the kids will want to do and our administration is OK with."īailee Lessenberry is a sophomore at Lexington who's involved in the decision-making process for theme nights for football. "We've been doing pink nights for a few years now, so that's one I think our student body almost expects and is prepared for," Minton said. Peabody cheerleader sponsor Veronica Minton said pink is typically a good night at Peabody as well. "That was one that a lot of people responded to because there's a lot of support for Michael and his family." "We had a yellow and gray night in football season for Michael Taylor as his mom was battling cancer," said USJ's Cameron Tinker. Usually the color nights are for awareness of a certain cause. There have been patriotic nights (wear red, white and blue), camouflage nights, beach nights, neon nights and other colors like pink, gold and gray nights. Other schools like Bolivar, Chester County, Gibson County, Lexington, South Gibson, Peabody and West Carroll have had their own versions of theme nights. USJ and TCA's efforts this year are simply enhancements to school spirit efforts from years past. "We let people know on Twitter, and Alex Northcut does school announcements over the PA each day, and he'll include that too if we get it to him." "There are a few of us who are in on the decision-making, and we try to make sure everyone knows two or three days out so they can plan," Cobb said. TCA senior Andrew Cobb is the Lion student who lets everyone know what the theme is for the following home game. "A lot of times it's a freshman trying to make himself known, but we have fun with it." "When everyone's coming in, you're always interested to see who's dressed the most unusual way. "It's fun because everybody is coming in like we have our own uniform supporting the team, and it was one of the first things as a freshman that I felt like linked us with the people ahead of us all the way to the seniors that year," Beecham said.
He said he and a few classmates like Cameron Tinker decided three years ago they would make sure senior year would be as enjoyable and memorable as possible because of how much fun they had at those games when they were younger. Reagan Beecham is a senior basketball player at USJ and has been a part of the fun since his freshman year. More schools in the area are joining in the fun. Local schools in West Tennessee have adopted the same method in an effort to increase school spirit and fan participation at basketball and football games, but local high school students are more creative in their selections of attire.įor the past few years, student sections at Trinity Christian Academy and University School of Jackson have chosen a couple of basketball games each year to have Hawaiian luaus or family-friendly toga parties in one section of the gym. They are now terms for commonplace practices when school athletic departments ask their fans to show up wearing certain colors in the name of school spirit. The terms "white-out" and "black-out" now no longer just mean a liquid to cover irreversible errors on paper or massive power outage. It's become almost routine in collegiate athletics over the last decade for team personnel to encourage their fans to dress a certain way for home games.
